Skincare sure does love its buzzwords and one that has seemed to appear more often these days is Peptide. We know they’re good for our skin and can take years off our appearance, but what actually is a peptide? How does it work? We’re here to give you all the info you’ll need on this powerful little anti-aging helper!
What is a Peptide?
A peptide is a link of amino acids that come together to help form proteins. They are able to transport nutrients in your body and send signals to other cells. Peptides are made up of four elements, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen. In short, amino acids can form peptides, and peptides can form proteins like collagen.
Peptides are becoming a more prominent component of many skincare creams because they play such an important role in collagen production. Using skincare that includes peptides has the potential to boost your skins firmness, smoothness, and strength.
Peptides and Collagen
When collagen is depleted by age and environmental factors like free radicals and sunlight, it never fully replaced in the body. As a result, smooth, young skin slowly becomes thinner and wrinkled over time.
Under 30, most people will experience ample amounts of collagen in their skin but as you get older, your body starts producing less natural collagen requiring some extra help from our peptide friends to create the look and feel of younger skin.
So How Can I Use Peptides To Look Younger?
When peptides are applied topically to your skin, it tricks it into thinking that it’s a collagen break down and that your body needs to manufacture new collagen. So you can successfully minimize wrinkles and give your skin a more youthful appearance with the application of skin care peptides.
Two of the most powerful peptides available are Matrixyl 3000 and Argireline. While Matrixyl will help to soften and smooth visible wrinkles and lines on the face, Argireline safely relaxes facial muscles resulting in youthful looking skin. Some experts have even mentioned these two peptides as the safest and best alternative to fillers and botox, without the hefty price tag.
In my time working at the University Compounding Pharmacy, I learned how to effectively combine multiple peptides effectively into one formula. Learning how to do this was the basis for me creating my Repair and Release Cream, an all in one anti-aging with Matrixyl 3000, Argireline and Synake combined into a powerful anti-aging formula.
