Menopause can bring some pretty drastic changes to your body and how it functions but it’s something that every woman will go through as they age.

Menopause causes estrogen production to slow and the ovaries to stop producing eggs. The first sign of menopause can be different for everyone but it usually begins when periods become erratic and then eventually stop all together.

As your estrogen levels drop, most women will experience some nasty side effects like hot flashes and night sweats. While it seems that most of the toll menopause takes can be uncomfortable but harmless, it also can have some drastic effects to how your skin ages.

Drops in estrogen levels before and during menopause can wreak havoc on your skin. It leaves your skin more vulnerable to redness, bumps, and other signs of irritation and can lead to increased dryness. Those dry spots are where wrinkles not only form, but worsen without proper hydration and care.

Estrogens stimulate fat deposits over the female body so as estrogen levels drop during menopause, fat deposits tend to become redistributed and often concentrated over the abdomen and/or on the thighs and buttocks. The result is a loss of supportive fat below the skin of the face, neck, hands and arms; this allows sagging wrinkles to appear.

So what can you do to keep your skin looking its best all while keeping pesky lines and wrinkles at bay during menopause? Make sure that instead of a harsh soap, you’re using a cleanser (and preferably an oil based one like our South Beach Olive Oil Cleanser) which allows your skin to maintain it’s healthy oils and adds moisture instead of drying skin out. Also make sure that you’re applying moisturizer right out of the shower or bath, and reapplying any time your skin feels dry to the touch. Your skin is craving extra hydration at this time so let it soak up all it can!

Pro tip: You can save money on both an oil cleanser and an anti-aging moisturizer by buying them together in a package like our South Beach Skin Lab – Full Beach Bag

Don’t forget your ingredients! With menopause doing its best to throw off your skin, you want to make sure your products are plentiful in peptides, nutrients and collagen boosters!
