Dr. Ryan Answers Important Questions About Botox + Aging

botox, botox for wrinkles, reverse wrinkles, wrinkle care, anti-aging

Sometimes we’re tempted to go to extremes in the pursuit of youthful, wrinkle-free skin. One of the more drastic options when it comes to anti-aging is Botox and it is one of the most commonly discussed topics with Dr. Ryan Shelton in his practice.

Dr. Shelton knows a thing or two about skin safety and getting results so here’s here to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about Botox to help you make the best decision.

Can Botox remove existing wrinkles or is it purely preventative?

botox, wrinkles, wrinkle care, botox questions, wrinkles, anti-agingRemoving anything from your body is going to be painful and expensive and to really “remove” wrinkles, you’ll be looking for laser treatments or facelifts.

Botox will simply freeze the muscles you inject it to doing two important things. The first is that it will smooth out existing wrinkles to the point where they are much less noticeable.  It will also freeze the muscles that it was injected into, limiting movement and helping to prevent future wrinkles from excessive facial expressions. In short, Botox can’t remove anything but it can help smooth for now and prevent for later.

How does Botox affect the overall health of your skin?

oily skin, botox side effects, botox, botox face, fillers, wrinkles, linesUsing botox can have some seriously harmful effects but most people will experience mild reactions like increased oil production where the injection was done, or redness and itchy skin.

To minimize the downsides of Botox on your skin, switch to an oil-based cleanser to help keep your oil production under control and revive your skin back to a balanced pH level. Using a moisturizer with natural ingredients will also limit the negative side effects you’ll notice from Botox.

Botox isn’t a permanent solution. Does this mean you need to continue getting it?

botox, safety of botox, needles, skincare hacks, anti-agingDespite what some doctors would like you to think, Botox is not a one-time solution that will keep you looking wrinkle-free forever.  Botox, like any skincare endeavor, requires upkeep and effort to maintain results. While Botox can provide you a few months of fewer wrinkles, you will be required to go back for touch-ups every few months which can carry a hefty price tag.

Unless you’ve got thousands of dollars a year to designate to your Botox treatments, I suggest sticking with an effective and proven skincare routine that is going to provide long term results and not just a temporary solution.

While Botox may seem appealing, just remember that it’s going to cost you big bucks and most of the time, you can achieve similar results with your South Beach Skin Lab Routine.

Is Makeup Bad For Your Skin? Here’s What You Need To Know

make, makeup for mature skin, skincare advice, makeup and skincare

Since our teenage days when we first experimented with too much blush and blue eyeshadow, we were always told that makeup can be cause for concern when it comes to your skin.

Some believe that applying makeup daily can leave you with deeper lines and wrinkles while others think the two have nothing to do with each other. We dove into the research to find out the truth once and for all…

Skin and Makeup

amy schumer, makeup and skincare, skincare tips, makeup tipsFor the most part, makeup is completely safe for your skin. When people run into skin issues from makeup, it can be caused by an allergy to one of the ingredients or a harsh reaction to the makeup itself.

Like skincare, it’s important to take note of ingredients in your makeup and make sure that it’s not only safe but that the product is formulated for your skin type. While South Beach Skin Lab products are formulated for all skin types, most makeup brands aren’t. These days, even makeup is customizable to dry skin, oily skin or even acne prone to minimize the chance of skin problems.

What Can Happen?

breakouts from makeup, makeup and acne, makeup and breakouts, south beach skin lab, skincare, anti-agingUsing too much makeup, or the wrong makeup can have serious consequences for the health of your skin. Pimples don’t often happen as a result of makeup, but in fact, the makeup seals your pores which become filled with dead skin and oil. Those are how breakouts happen and can be one of the main side effects of the wrong products.

Some people can also experience redness, inflammation, eczema or rosacea as a result of ingredients used in their makeup products. Something to remember is that ingredients in makeup are not regulated in America, so it’s best to educate yourself of irritating ingredients like parabens to avoid skin issues.

How Can You Fix Your Skin?

skincare fix, makeup and skincare, anti-aging, makeup, skincareJust because you’re experiencing skin issues right now does not mean that it’s your fate. A few easy changes to your routine can make sure that your skin is protected, even if you need a little makeup to look and feel your best. For starters, read makeup ingredients and ask questions when you purchase your products the same way you would skincare.

If giving up makeup seems like a curse to you, then there is no need! If you’re taking proper care of your face before and after makeup application, chances are you won’t be doing your skin any harm.

Instead of using oily makeup removers, opt for an oil-based cleanser like our Day & Night Olive Oil Cleanser which removes 99.9% of makeup from the day. This will allow your pores to breath at night, and also dig deep to clear our dead skin and oil from your face, leaving nothing but a healthy and youthful glow!

This Common Kitchen Ingredient Can Help Your Skin In Unexpected Ways

SKINCARE, ANTI-AGING, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR,

Imagine a common kitchen ingredient that can do wonders for your skin’s brightness, texture, and health. Now walk to your fridge, grab your Apple Cider Vinegar, and get to know it better because it just became your best skincare friend.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is so common, you can find it in most kitchens and almost any grocery store. It has tons of different uses but one of the most surprising might be how many different benefits it has for your skin!

Just dilute some ACV with water in a bowl and use a cotton pad to rub it on your face like a toner. Here are just a few of the skin-related problems that a homemade ACV toner can help you solve…

Wrinkles

apple cider vinegar, wrinkles, anti-aging, diy skincareAs we age our skin naturally loses it’s elasticity and wrinkles and sagging begin to form all over the face. ACV can be used in skin care as a toner, face wash, and even a spot treatment for problem areas.

ACV works to fight wrinkles by keeping the pH levels in your skin at the right levels and keeping your face hydrated. When skin is balanced and nourished, wrinkles appear less visible. It will also help tighten skin and pores, reducing how deep your wrinkles are.

Breakouts

acne, breakouts, adult acne, adult breakouts, apple cider vinegar, diy skincareBreakouts happen because dirt, grime, and bacteria have found a way into our pores below the outer layer of skin. Breakouts can be caused by genetics, dirty makeup brushes, environmental factors, or even something as simple as touching your face a lot throughout the day.

ACV naturally carries antimicrobial properties which means it helps destroy bacteria and germs in your skin on contact. Not only can regular use of ACV on your skin help keep bacteria at bay and pores clean, but it also helps tighten larger pores to keep excess dirt out in the future.

Skin Tone

skin tone, dark spots, pigmentation skin, apple cider vinegar, diy skincareWinter is sure to have your skin looking more dull than usual so why not reach for the ACV to help your skin tone and brighten your beautiful face! Nothing can make you look older than dark spots and uneven pigmentation so this easy to use toner is a great choice if you want to look your best.

The acids in ACV work to brighten your complexion, leaving your skin with a golden glow. Because it works to balance your skins pH level at the same time, it’s helping control your oil production, breakouts and had even been proven to lighten dark spots for skin that looks so great, you could skip foundation!

Beauty Sleep Is Real And Here Is Why Your Skin Craves It

sleep, skincare, anti-aging

Did you know that your body does the most work while you’re sleeping at night? That’s when it’s at its strongest to fight sickness, recharge muscles, and of course, keep your body healthy and balanced.

As we age, sleep becomes one of the most important allies on the pursuit to youthful, supple skin. Sadly for most of us, work, family and life have us often neglecting how much sleep we really need, hurting our bodies and our skin.

Here are just a few of the ways a good night sleep can help you achieve your skincare goals and take years off your appearance.

It Repairs Your Moisture Levels

hydration, face care, anti-aging, beauty sleepWhen you sleep, you actually sweat more than when you’re awake. The good news is while you’re sleeping, your body is hard at work balancing and recovering it’s natural moisture levels.

If you’re lacking sleep it can also affect those moisture levels in your skin and lower your complexion’s PH level.  When your PH levels drop, skin becomes imbalanced and doesn’t produce the moisture it needs. This leads to drier, unhealthy skin that highlights wrinkles and lines instead of concealing and treating them. If your skin is on the dry side, make sure you’re using a hydrating moisturizer like our Repair & Release Cream.

Getting a solid 8 hours a night can help keep your skin hydrated and healthy and give it the time it needs to repair.

It Helps Your Eyes Look Younger

eye bags, eye wrinkles, puffy eyesYour eyes are the first thing people will notice when they meet you but they can also be the thing that gives your true age away. The eye area is made up of thin, delicate skin that can wrinkle and sag worse than any other part of the face.

When you’re not getting enough sleep, the eye area reacts with pesky dark circles that can be difficult to hide. Because your skin is also lacking moisture from lack of sleep, it can increase puffiness from dehydration and lead to some serious eye bags.

To keep your eyes looking brighter, less puffy and younger, make sure you’re getting enough rest and do your best to sleep on your back instead of your face or sides. This will help keep blood flowing to the eye area and help keep dark circles, puffiness, and wrinkles at bay.

It Slows Down The Aging Process

beauty sleep, collagen, aging process, anti-agingWhen you’re not getting enough sleep, it messes with your bodies natural ability to produce important proteins like collagen. As we age, naturally our bodies produce lower amounts of collagen so when you add sleep deprivation to that, your skin is really going to be lacking collagen supply.

Lack of collagen can lead to more wrinkles and lines because this is the main protein that helps fight signs of aging and adds elasticity to the skin. When your skin lacks collagen, it starts to shows more noticeable signs of aging by becoming thinner and less firm.  When skin is thin, it appears less smooth and supple and showcases wrinkling more prominently.

To keep your skin producing as many natural anti-aging properties as possible, make sure you’re getting plenty of rest. Sleep will help increase your collagen production and help you reach your skincare goals, even when you’re in dreamland.

Tip: The best support for collagen production comes from products that help your skin naturally produce more. Look for ingredients like Matrixyl 3000, featured in our Repair & Release Cream.

What Is Skin Mapping And What Can It Tell You About Your Face?

face mapping, skincare, face map, breakouts, skin health

Skin mapping is an ancient practice used for centuries in Chinese medicine. It’s the practice of examining the face to read factors from the inside of the body that are contributing to what you see on the outside of your body.

Skin mapping can help helpful for all, but especially helpful if you ever suffer from breakouts or clogged pores. Face mapping has been proven to get to the bottom of where your skin issues are coming from and help you solve them.

Below are three areas of your face you need to make sure you’re analyzing that can help you discover exactly what your skin and body really need for a healthy glow!

The T-Zone

face mapping, tzone, skincareThe T-Zone consists of two areas of your face, your forehead and the area between your eyebrows, all down your nose. Using the technique of face mapping, the two different areas can reveal two different things about what your skin and body need.

If you experience breakouts on your forehead, face mapping concludes that could mean you’re under a lot of stress or staying up way too late. Instead of staying up late, try listening to some relaxing music and reading a book to help you fall asleep earlier and get a solid 8 hours of sleep.

If your breakouts happen to be between the eyebrows and on the nose, this could indicate there is an imbalance in your liver, kidneys or spleen. You’ll want to watch your diet and make sure you’re taking a multivitamin and getting lots of nutritious foods and drinks into your body to help resolve the issue.

The Cheeks

face mapping, skincare, cheeksWhen your cheeks are experiencing breakouts, it’s your body letting you know something about your lifestyle isn’t doing what it needs to support healthy skin. If breakouts are on the outer parts of your cheek, it can be because of factors like smoking or drinking.

Those types of breakouts indicate an imbalance in the liver and lungs and are a warning sign to your body that you need to make some simple lifestyle changes. Avoiding things like greasy and spicy foods, getting more exercise and drinking lots of H2O is sure to clear up these breakouts in no time!

The Chin

face mapping, skincare, breakoutsBreakouts on your chin can happen just below the mouth or even occur closer to your jawline. What face mapping tells us about this area is that skin issues that arise here are related to your digestive system and colon. These digestive issues show up as clogged pores and the chin is one of the most common places people experience breakouts.

The easiest and fastest way to clear and avoid further disruption to your skin in the chin area is to make sure you increase your intake of fruits and veggies. Because they have high amounts of fiber, it will help optimize the performance of your large intestine, colon, and stomach to digest food better and keep skin young and clear!

You’re getting lots of rest, your diligent about your skincare routine, and you take anti-aging seriously, so one would think you’ve got all your bases covered… except for a true skin care expert. They know the one place that gives your age away no matter how good you take care of your face is your hands.

Your hands happen to be the most exposed part of the skin on your body, even more than your face! Because of it’s constant exposure to elements, your hands can age quickly leaving wrinkles, dark spots and sagging skin and no matter how great your face looks, this can give away your true age.

Moisturize Them

hands, wrinkles, dark spots, anti-agingYour skin looks the best when it’s got a healthy amount of hydration and that is true for your hands too! Like your face, wrinkles can appear deeper and more severe when they are dehydrated. Using a moisturizer at least twice a day on your hands can help keep wrinkles at bay and keep your hands as soft as possible.

If you’re looking for added muscle power in fighting hand wrinkles, you can always use your anti-wrinkle moisturizer like the Repair & Release Cream. Because of the powerful anti-wrinkle peptides like Matrixyl 3000 and Argileine, this will provide extra help to repair your wrinkles than an average hand cream will while still providing all the hydration your hands could need.

Protect Them

sunburn, hands, wrinkles, dark spotsWe cannot emphasize this enough… SPF is your BFF! If your skin isn’t protected from the sun, you’re going to get burned!

Using an SPF on your hands is crucial to avoiding sun damage and causing premature aging on your hands. This helps keep your hands protected from further damage and protects your skin so it’s able to heal itself from free radicals.

To make sure your hands are safe from harmful rays, apply an SPF to the tops of your hands at least 3 times a day, or anytime after washing your hands. If you’re spending the day at the beach or out in the sun, we suggest re-applying every hour for extra protection.

Enhance Them

manicure, anti-aging, aging hands, wrinkles, dark spotsA little pampering and self-care can make anyone feel their best! When it comes to aging hands, something as simple as a manicure can have your hands looking their best and leave you feeling great about yourself!

These Makeup Mistakes Can Be The Reason You Look Older Than You Are

makeup, anti-aging, makeup mistakes

As we age and trends change, the rules of makeup change too. Suddenly the bright and colorful trends we once loved just don’t seem to compliment our face and skin anymore. So what’s a gal to do?!

The good news is that there are a few easy tips to keep in mind when applying your make up that are guaranteed to help you look younger and your skin looks healthier. These are some of the biggest mistakes that are making you look much older than you really are and how to avoid them.

Not Wearing Lip Liner

lip liner, makeup tips, anti-agingAs you age, you start to lose the natural contours of your lip line from factors like facial expressions and gravity. This is the biggest culprit of what we call “Grandma lips” where your lip color or lipstick begins to bleed into the skin around the mouth. This can make your lips and your entire face look almost a decade older than it is.

To avoid this and help your lips look years younger, use a lip liner and trace the edges of where you’d like your lipstick to stop and create those contour lines yourself. If you’re using a dark or bright colored lipstick, feel free to match your lip liner shade to that but if you’re looking for a more natural color, you can also use a clear lip liner pencil that will keep color from bleeding on to your skin.

Too Much Concealer

eye bags, dark eye circles, makeup tips, anti-aging makeup, concealerWhen you’re young, you learn that concealer can be your best friend after a late night or a busy week to hide those unattractive dark circles. The problem is that as we age, the skin around our eyes becomes thinner and heavy concealers can look cakey and creased which will make your wrinkles and dark circles look even worse!

To make sure that dark circles are covered but lines and wrinkles aren’t enhanced by using too much concealer, opt for one that is lighter coverage. This will cover the dark circles but blend better with eye wrinkles so they mask them instead of making them stand out. If you find your dark circles are still visible with a lighter concealer, try using a color corrector first before applying your concealer for extra help dulling the darkness.

Putting Eyeliner On Your Lower Lashes

anti-aging, anti-aging makeup, eyeliner, makeup tipsAs we age, the eye area is one of the most difficult areas to cover wrinkles and lines. This is because of all the parts of your face, the eyes are touched the most with makeup application and because of the thin skin around the eyes, it is most likely to sag from gravity.

When you put eyeliner on your lower lashes, all it does is make your eyes look smaller and draw attention to dark circles and crows feet. Instead, use eyeliner only on the top part of your eye and try to make it thicker towards the outer edges. This makes your eyes pop while also providing a lifting illusion to the sagging skin in the corners of your eye.

Dirty Makeup Brushes Are Doing Serious Harm To Your Skin!

Not cleaning your makeup brushes is considered one of the biggest sins in skincare. Not only does the cleanliness of your makeup brush affect the way your makeup is being applied to your face, but it also has some serious impact on the way your skin looks and feels.

A good rule of thumb is to make sure you’re cleaning your brushes at least once a month. If it’s a brush you use to apply liquid makeup then we suggest at least twice a month as those products can carry more dirt and bacteria than powders. What happens if you don’t wash your brushes often enough? You can expect some unwanted side effects like:

Clogged Pores

clogged pores, not washing makeup brushes, makeup brushesEvery time you apply a product to your brush, there is buildup. Over time, that buildup can result in some serious bacteria and germs that will live on your brush and that will clog your pores when applying the makeup to your face.

Clogged pores can lead to breakouts and as long as your brushes aren’t clean, you’re simply just spreading those germs back and forth between your face, your makeup, and your brush.

Breakouts

breakouts, makeup brushes, not cleaning make up brushesThink you’re too old for breakouts? Think again! If you’re starting to notice breakouts on your face where your blush, foundation or any other makeup is being applied, chances are we’ve now discovered the culprit.

If your brushes aren’t being cleaned properly and often enough, chances are, they’re going to contribute to some serious pimples and impurities. Even if your skin is “clean,” your brushes are still collecting oil, dust, dead skin, and the fallout from greasy hair products you spray around your mirror that is sure to cause breakouts.

Wrinkles

wrinkles, makeup brushes, cleaning make up brushesJust like us, skin can become stressed out. When you’re using dirty makeup brushes packed with bacteria and dirt and touching them to your face, your skin is getting put under tons of stress and the way it deals with that is to wrinkle.

The effects of stressed out skin are often a breakdown of collagen and elastin. Those are the two components your skin produces to fight wrinkles, sagging and aging.

How often do you wash your makeup brushes? Let us know in the comments below!

We’ve Heard This Skincare Buzzword Before, But What Actually Is Collagen?

collagen, skin care, skincare, anti-aging

Like so many dermatologist buzzwords, we hear about Collagen all the time. We’re told we need to increase our production of it and that we are constantly trying to protect it, but how many of us actually know what it is?

Collagen is like the glue for your body. It is a protein and it accounts for one-third of the total protein in the human body. Collagen is in your bones, muscle, skin, and tendons.

But it is different from many proteins in our body because of the extremely high levels of amino acids that makeup the collagen protein molecule. All of which help our body’s connective tissue, skin, hair, nails, as well as gut health stay as healthy as possible

Why do we lose collagen?

We naturally lose collagen as we age and production of it slows down when we get older, but there are lots of other ways you can be harming your collagen production.

Make sure you’re keeping safe from UV rays which can wreak havoc on collagen production. Also, make sure to watch things like your sugar intake or bad habits like smoking which can also cut down your production of collagen.

Aging alone can affect your collagen levels too. Around the age of 40, your collagen production will decline and most women notice a dramatic difference after menopause. Your skin will get looser, more wrinkles will appear and you will have less elasticity in your skin, resulting in lines and wrinkles throughout the face.

So how can you help the production of collagen in your skin to keep you looking youthful and wrinkle-free?

Eat The Right Foods

berries, collagen production, collagen, anti agingThere are lots of foods that can help increase your collagen production. Anything with high protein, Vitamin A or Vitamin C will do the trick like berries, almonds or avocados. Dark green vegetables have also been known to benefit your collagen production too.

Face Massage

collagen production, collagen, face massage, anti agingNot only does it feel GREAT, but giving yourself a face massage can actually stimulate the collagen in your skin and help plump already existing wrinkles. It also helps increase the circulation in your face which can do wonders to fight future signs of aging.

Use The Right Ingredients

collagen, collagen prodction, anti aging, face creamWhen purchasing and applying skincare products to your face, make sure they have a specific function to aid in producing collagen. Ingredients like Matrixyl 3000 which can be found in the South Beach Skin Lab – Repair and Release Cream and has been lab proven to increase the production of collagen and help plump wrinkles and lines with continued use.
