Too Much or Too Little: How To Find Balance in Your Skincare Routine

Skincare can seem like a complicated process, so you would be forgiven if you’re not exactly sure how to optimize your appearance. However, that is no excuse to accept premature aging! The experts at South Beach Skin Lab have the following five skincare tips to make the most out of your skincare routine.

Too Much

Believe it or not, there can be too much of a good thing, especially when it comes to your skincare. Even if you have some positive skincare strategies, if you are overusing them, you could be unknowingly damaging your skin.

Too Much Cleansing

Clean skin is a good thing, but if you are over-cleaning it, the drying affects will start to show. Wrinkles and premature signs of aging will creep in with skin that is being washed and scrubbed too much as the natural oils that work to hydrate and protect the skin will be stripped away.

Too Much Exfoliating

Exfoliating is a highly beneficial practice when it comes to caring for your facial skin as it keeps skin clean and free of dead skin cells. However, too much exfoliating can be detrimental to your skincare regime as it can actually damage the dermal layers beneath the dead skin cell layer that moderate exfoliating removes. There are areas of the skin that are more sensitive than others, such as the under-eye areas. Areas like these are especially sensitive and vulnerable to damage from over-exfoliating. Skin that has been worked too much with exfoliating will be red, blotchy, and tender.

Too Many Products

Once we find an arsenal of good skincare products, it can be tempting to overuse them. If it makes our skin feel and look better, more should produce more positive results, right? The answer is most definitely not. Most products, especially those that are scientifically backed like the South Beach Skin Lab products, are designed with a certain amount of use in mind. Using them too much can counteract their positive affects. Too much moisturizing can make skin oily. Too much facial cleansing can strip the skin of its natural oils. Applying too many products to the skin, including makeup, too often will smother the skin and clog the pores. Skin needs time to breathe, time to be exposed to the restorative power of air and nature.

Too Little

Just as doing too much for your skin can have negative results, so too can doing too little. Life gets busy, no doubt about it. We all need to carve out time when it comes to our health and wellness, and our skin is a big part of looking and feeling our best.

Too Little Protection

Especially in the summer months, protecting our skin with an appropriate sunblock is the best thing we can do. Not only does it protect our skin from the drying effects of sunburn, it also decreases the chances of developing skin cancer. If you are rushing out the door to spend the day outside, don’t forget the sunscreen; your face will thank you for it.

Too Little Cleansing

At the end of a long day, often we just want to collapse into bed or in front of the TV. Retiring for the day without first cleansing the skin can lead to dryness, wrinkles, and other signs of premature aging. The skin needs to be refreshed from the day just like we do. Before hitting the sheets or the couch, take a few minutes to scrub the day’s makeup and grime from your skin so your face will wake us looking as refreshed as you feel after a good night’s sleep.

Just Right

When it comes to caring for your skin, you really need to find that balance. Carving out a little time at the beginning and end of each day to dedicate to a regular skincare routine is a positive way to ensure you will look as good as you feel.
