These Makeup Mistakes Can Be The Reason You Look Older Than You Are

As we age and trends change, the rules of makeup change too. Suddenly the bright and colorful trends we once loved just don’t seem to compliment our face and skin anymore. So what’s a gal to do?!

The good news is that there are a few easy tips to keep in mind when applying your make up that are guaranteed to help you look younger and your skin looks healthier. These are some of the biggest mistakes that are making you look much older than you really are and how to avoid them.

Not Wearing Lip Liner

clean skin As you age, you start to lose the natural contours of your lip line from factors like facial expressions and gravity. This is the biggest culprit of what we call “Grandma lips” where your lip color or lipstick begins to bleed into the skin around the mouth. This can make your lips and your entire face look almost a decade older than it is.

To avoid this and help your lips look years younger, use a lip liner and trace the edges of where you’d like your lipstick to stop and create those contour lines yourself. If you’re using a dark or bright colored lipstick, feel free to match your lip liner shade to that but if you’re looking for a more natural color, you can also use a clear lip liner pencil that will keep color from bleeding on to your skin.

Too Much Concealer

rub to hard When you’re young, you learn that concealer can be your best friend after a late night or a busy week to hide those unattractive dark circles. The problem is that as we age, the skin around our eyes becomes thinner and heavy concealers can look cakey and creased which will make your wrinkles and dark circles look even worse!

To make sure that dark circles are covered but lines and wrinkles aren’t enhanced by using too much concealer, opt for one that is lighter coverage. This will cover the dark circles but blend better with eye wrinkles so they mask them instead of making them stand out. If you find your dark circles are still visible with a lighter concealer, try using a color corrector first before applying your concealer for extra help dulling the darkness.

Putting Eyeliner On Your Lower Lashes

clean skin As we age, the eye area is one of the most difficult areas to cover wrinkles and lines. This is because of all the parts of your face, the eyes are touched the most with makeup application and because of the thin skin around the eyes, it is most likely to sag from gravity.

When you put eyeliner on your lower lashes, all it does is make your eyes look smaller and draw attention to dark circles and crows feet. Instead, use eyeliner only on the top part of your eye and try to make it thicker towards the outer edges. This makes your eyes pop while also providing a lifting illusion to the sagging skin in the corners of your eye.
